Maranatha Senior Andrew Huang Awarded SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

Andrew Huang ’18 was recently awarded a 2018 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for his potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics, or related field.

Andrew, who also signed a Letter of Intent for Fencing at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in the fall, is planning to major in Physics or a related field. Prior to his enrollment, he worked with Professor Yuk Yung and Dr. Sally Newman at CalTech, helping perform atmospheric chemistry research, collecting and processing data on nitrogen dioxide. As a student, Andrew helped establish the Maranatha Science Club where he founded the Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, and SeaPerch teams. Additionally, he presented his research on a novel gravitational wave detection system, which he developed independently using optical fibers and photonics techniques.

The Society awarded $293,000 in education scholarships to 85 outstanding SPIE student members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated, selected, and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, chaired by SPIE volunteer Jeremy Bos.

Through 2017, SPIE has distributed $5.7 million dollars in individual scholarships. This ambitious effort reflects the Society’s commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists and engineers around the world.
