Maranatha Wins Big at Southern California Debate League Fall Varsity Speech Tournament

On Saturday December 8, 2018, the Maranatha Speech and Debate Team competed at the annual SCDL Fall Varsity Speech Tournament at Schurr High School.
Maranatha featured twenty competitors in eight different event categories. At the end of the evening, the Minutemen earned trophies in several individual events and brought home the first place team trophy.

Special recognition goes to Jack Hrovat, Samantha Chi, and Pablo Elias for their awards in the General Interpretation category and Victoria Luo, Nick Sartor, and Kyle Lin for their awards in the General Platform Speech category.

The Varsity categories also featured special accomplishments. Joel Turk was a semi-finalist for Impromptu Speech featuring 87 competitors. Ximena Santoro and Samantha Santoro earned trophies in Duo Interpretation Speech and freshman Samuel Tong earned a trophy in International Extemporaneous Speech.

The Maranatha Speech and Debate Team has a long history of success in competitive tournaments. As the 2018 year comes to an end, the Speech and Debate Team is celebrating a successful 2018 season and is preparing for 2019. The classes are finishing the first semester by writing their spring debate cases and Rotary speeches for their final projects in the intro and advanced classes. Any students interested in joining the team for the spring 2019 season must sign up with Mr. Mesisca before the fall semester ends.
