On Saturday, September 15, the Maranatha Speech and Debate Team sent 46 students to compete in the annual Icebreaker Tournament.
The Icebreaker Tournament incorporates four improvisational events in which students compete against other schools. The students have been preparing for the tournament in class by honing their skills in improvisational acting, spontaneous debate, and mock interviews.
The Maranatha Duo of freshman Ximena Santoro and junior Samantha Santoro placed 8th overall against 250 teams of two. Coach Pat Mesisca ‘92 said, “I am excited to have officially kicked off the Speech and Debate tournament season during Homecoming weekend. It was exciting to see so many students and families support our Speech and Debate program on such a busy weekend for our school. I’m so proud of all of our students but Ximena and Samantha deserve special recognition for their 8th place award.””
This weekend, September 21-23, the Varsity Speech and Debate Team will compete in the annual Jack Howe Invitational at Cal State Long Beach.
