Maranatha’s Speech Team Success Continues in Spring

Maranatha’s Speech Team is blooming with top wins!

On Saturday, February 2, the Maranatha High School Speech Team competed in the Annual Southern California Debate League Varsity Speech Tournament at Arcadia High School.

Freshmen Henry Barker, Faith Ising, Pablo Elias, and Christina Gonzalez and junior Kyle Lin brought home trophies in the General Speech categories for their Platform or Interpretation speeches. Junior Joel Turk placed 11th in Impromptu against 120 contestants and freshman Samuel Tong was a semifinalist in International Extemporaneous and just missed the finals finishing in 8th place overall. Junior Victoria Luo also finished 11th in Oratory against 63 contestants. Victoria Luo’s speech on Chinese discrimination won the hearts of the judges and the Maranatha community. Maranatha’s Speech and Debate Advisor, Pat Mesisca ‘92, said, “It was a very moving speech that brought to light a sensitive issue with excellent use of humor and facts to defend her position that everyone is better off when we love and support one another as we run the races of life together.”

The Speech and Debate Team is currently preparing for the California State Qualifying Tournaments coming in March and The Rotary Four-Way Test Speech Contest that will be held at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church on Wednesday and Thursday, February 27-28 at 6:00 p.m.
