Marshall Fundamental Soccer Defensive Midfielder Asia Jota Receives Presidential Scholarship to Bethany Lutheran College



Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, Class of 2020 senior Asia Jota was selected to receive a four year Presidential Academic Scholarship to Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota. In addition to her academic commitment Asia plans to play women’s soccer as a Lady Viking with Bethany Lutheran, a NCAA Division III institution beginning her 2020 – 2021 academic year.

Asia’s academic focus is Biochemistry with career aspirations to become a doctor. Asia is academically strong and is in the top 10% of her graduating class. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Asian Club, Unidos, and the Soccer Club. Asia’s interest in soccer began during elementary school while watching her best friend Amy practice. Since then she has played for Pasadena LEARNs in elementary and middle school; AYSO, FC Golden State and Los Angeles Surf Soccer Club the Flight 1 Europa East Bracket Champions of Southern California Developmental Soccer League who were finalists in the fall playoffs of the SCDSL 2019 Season.

For the Marshall Fundamental Eagles Asia began her play with the team beginning her Sophomore Year having to sit out her freshman year due to injury. When talking about her recovery Asia and her parents, James and Alison Jota credit her coach, Esteban (Steve) Villanueva for Asia’s full recuperation to health. Mr. Villanueva stated, “Asia made it easy, she listened, she worked hard, and she took my advice, it was her who did all the work.” Asia a natural leader was the captain of her school and club teams.

When talking about her educational goals Asia stated, “I’m excited to be able to work academically toward a career in medicine and am very excited to be able to do it while continuing my journey playing a game I love in such a beautiful place.”

The Marshall Fundamental Secondary School Faculty, Athletic Department, and Girls Soccer Congratulates Asia on her accomplishments. Asia’s parents are Alison and James Jota; the Marshall Fundamental Athletic Director is Stan Makiyama; and the Marshall Fundamental Girls Soccer Coach is Victor Lugo.

Marshall Fundamental School is a public school in the Pasadena Unified School District serving students in grades six through twelve. Marshall Fundamental offers 14 high school sports and 26 high school sports teams. U.S News and World Report named it a 2018 Silver Medalist Best High School and Principal, Dr. Mark Anderson, the California State Principal of the Year 2019.
