Mayfield Junior School’s Elementary Speech & Debate team competed in the Southern California Junior Forensics League (SCJFL) Tournament at Roosevelt Elementary School in the city of San Gabriel, and swept the top seven podium spots in the Open Poetry category. In three separate rounds, each student performed a poem with consistent and dramatic flair, enunciation and pronunciation, and voice variation and projection.

Mayfield students also placed in the top ten in Stanford Spontaneous Argumentation (SPAR) and Open Storytelling.

The tournament was the largest elementary speech and debate event on the West Coast hosting eight schools and speech academies with nearly 200 third-fifth grade students participating in SPAR, Congress and Open Categories for poetry informative speech, storytelling, impromptu and extemporaneous speech.

The MJS team began competing in poetry three years ago out of a growing interest to develop performance, communication and public speaking skills of Lower School students. As early as kindergarten, students at Mayfield learn and refine their presentation aptitude and style through speech and debate, stage plays, musical concerts and individual speaking opportunities like daily Morning Prayer.

The team has grown to 48 students, meets every week after school to continually improve not only public speaking skills but also critical thinking, thought organization, gesturing and listening.
