Pasadena Islamic School Recognized as a “Green Ribbon School”

Pasadena’s New Horizons School was given a special recognition by Green Ribbon Schools.org, a reward and recognition program for K-12 students for completing four projects around green building, recycling, conservation, the outdoors, health, nutrition and fitness.

New Horizon School is one of the 63 schools in 13 states that was awarded the recognition for achieving the online community’s highest level of participation during the 2011-2012 school year.

The four green projects of New Horizons include:
• Eco-Campus – Lower School Nature Playground – all grades, http://www.greenribbonschools.org/activity-detail.php?id=1191&resId=1404

In an interview last month, with New Horizons Head Amira Al-Sharraf thanked the Pasadena community for being a good partner with the school.

“Pasadena has been a warm and welcoming home for us,” Al-Sharraf said.

Green Ribbon Schools also awarded New Horizon’s Nature Playground project for winning the Earth Month Challenge Contest that was announced in April this year. The school was awarded 72 reusable Nalgene water bottles from the outdoor recreation company REI.

The Green Ribbon Schools program helps teachers use nature, health and fitness, and STEM activities to enrich and extend students’ education. STEM skills teach kids about – and how to apply — science, technology, engineering and math.

Green Ribbon Schools is challenging the 648 elementary, middle and high schools in its 40-state communities to create a “Greenprint” for 2012-2013 and transform them into success stories.

The national “Green Ribbon Schools” recognition and award program is collaboration among organizations committed to helping children develop their full potential by connecting with nature.

Focused on the theme, “Growing Peace One Child at a Time,” New Horizon has integrated the concepts of sustainability, stewardship, and appreciation for nature into the school program. The elementary campus launched a Nature Playground in January 2012 which has been recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation.

In May 2012, Nickelodeon’s Big Help recognized NHS Pasadena for promoting environmental education and volunteerism, and the cast from “How to Rock” worked with middle school students on several garden-based projects.

The middle school campus is in the process of installing a Peace Garden for use by the whole school as an outdoor science classroom and for outreach in the local community. Projected completion date is April 2013.
