Pasadena Unified Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with Art, Writing, Campus Cleanups and Commemorations



Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) students, staff and community members will commemorate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with a number of events over the next week.

The commemoration kicks off at 6:30 p.m. tonight with art displays and readings by finalists and winners of the Martin Luther King (MLK) Community Coalition Art and Essay Contest. The event will be at Hamilton Elementary School and admission is free.

Washington STEAM Magnet Academy will host “A Day On, Not Off” January 17 from 8 a.m. to noon with a morning of campus beautification, landscaping and planting. The event is designed to encourage individuals to improve their community to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. The beautification activities will be followed by a program with entertainment from Washington STEAM students and brief remarks by local leaders.

The MLK Community Coalition, PUSD, Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and Aspires West of Pasadena in conjunction with the city of Pasadena, and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Gamma Lambda chapter present the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday breakfast and celebration. Families, friends, community members, and local and state political leaders will be in attendance as student achievers are presented awards for their participation in the MLK Community Coalition Essay and Art Contest. PUSD Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald will also deliver remarks at the event.

Event #1: Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay and Art Contest Readings and Art Presentations
Date/Time: Monday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Location: Alexander Hamilton Elementary School, 2089 Rose Villa Street, Pasadena

Event #2: “A Day On, Not Off” Campus Cleanup and Beautification
Date/Time: Saturday, January 17 from 8 a.m. – Noon.
Location: Washington STEAM Magnet Academy, 1505 North Marengo Avenue, Pasadena

Event #3: Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Holiday Celebration and Student Awards
Date/Time: Monday, January 19
8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.: “Freedom March” Documentary and Breakfast
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: King Holiday Celebration and Program
12:30 p.m.: Lunch
