Teachers from Pasadena Unified spend their summer breaks helping SKILLZ Summer School kids understand the math concepts they need to start the school year strong.
SKILLZ Summer School is a free learning experience for teens at risk of dropping out of school. Coordinated by Flintridge Center, SKILLZ is hosted on the beautiful Lake Avenue Church campus for five weeks each summer. The goal of the program is to provide a safe, nurturing alternative for youth during the summer, while reducing drop-out rates and increasing graduation rates. SKILLZ provides students entering 7th grade with courses designed to build their academic competence and workshops to provide valuable life skills. Coordinated by Flintridge, credentialed PUSD instructors teach academic classes, and local high school and college students provide one-on-one assistance. Day One coordinates evidence-based life skills workshops to empower students to deal with challenges such as dating violence, goal setting, and conflict resolution.
