Pasadena’s Muir High Gets $50,000 Grant for Athlete Training Program

Pasadena’s John Muir High School has been awarded a $50,000 grant to establish an athletic training program to improve youth athlete safety in underserved high schools.

John Muir is one of 15 schools around the country to receive the grant from the NFL Foundation, the National Athletic Trainers’ Assn, Gatorade and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society after winning in the Athletic Trainer Initiative, a national grant contest to expand access to athletic trainers in underserved high schools and improve youth athlete safety.

In announcing the winners, NFL Communications said John Muir has no access to an athletic trainer and relies on volunteers to support coaches with medical needs at games. This prevents the school from implementing proper injury prevention and assessment methods and providing the necessary equipment to ensure the safety of their student athletes.

“This effort addresses a critical need and provides the means for these high schools to establish athletic training programs that will enhance the health and safety of their student athletes,” said JEFF MILLER, NFL executive vice president of health and safety policy. “This is an area of priority for us, and we will continue to work with our partners to expand access to athletic trainers in more schools across the country.”

The grant will now allow the school to hire a full-time athletic trainer and provide athletic training services – staff, facilities, equipment, supplies and access – for all students. Currently lacking proper equipment, the school plans to use the funds to obtain diagnostic tools and technology for proper evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of concussions.

“We’re very, very excited,” John Muir’s assistant principal Brian James said in a Los Angeles Times report. “We’re creating a model we hope is sustainable.”

The report said Muir plans to establish training areas outside involving football, soccer and track athletes and inside for basketball, volleyball and other athletes. The school will hire a full-time trainer and intends to make it a long-term endeavor. Previously, a retired EMT was helping the school with taping and other training issues.

Muir recently was able to renovate its baseball field with the help of the Dodgers and is raising funds to help support its training program.
