Last week Poly eighth-graders presented their final performance to friends and family, with jazz improvisation and dance sharing the stage. Jazz improvisation is a class for students who are interested in learning about jazz and the fundamentals of soloing in a group. This semester, students learned a variety of terms associated with jazz, how to navigate a lead sheet, find guide tones in a set of chord changes, and write a blues head. In dance, students worked on their dance technique and learned group dances in hip-hop and contemporary styles. Student choreography resulted in small group pieces in the styles of lyrical, hip-hop, contemporary, and tap.
Choreography by Danielle Pigneri, Cameron S. ’18, and dancers; technical direction by Richard Sherrell and Tom Allard.
