Polytechnic School: Bonds Grow Stronger Out Here
The Outdoor Education program is an integral and important part of a student’s Middle School experience. Students participate in one trip per school year in grades six through eight. Each trip has a different focus, but the experiences learned build on one another other so that when the student leaves the eighth grade, a basic foundation of outdoor experiences has been attained.
The sixth grade trip, set in an alpine environment, focuses on community, group, and teamwork. Students participate in many activities and learn to work together to achieve common goals. The seventh grade trip, through the medium of backpacking and desert camping, focuses on the wilderness ethic of “leave no trace.” The eighth grade trip, a water-based expedition, requires students to work together as they paddle canoes, camp, and hike in a remote environment.
