Polytechnic School: The Art of Persuasion

The art of persuasion: Take 74 eighth grade students, ask them to find topics on which to deliver a persuasive speech, and prepare to be impressed with the results. Several weeks ago, these students chose topics and then researched, wrote, and memorized their speeches.

They then delivered their talks to audiences of peers and teachers; semi-finalists addressed a panel of judges. The five finalists spoke eloquently and passionately yesterday in front of a panel of invited judges and the entire Middle School about their topics, which included domestic violence awareness, the democratic process, marine animal rights, voter fraud, and awareness of dehumanization.

After the speeches, Middle School students met with advisory groups while the judges deliberated. After what must have been a nearly impossible task for the judges, the group reconvened and the judges announced a winner.
