Ramona Convent Secondary School Graduation 2016

Nature surely smiled on the class of 2016 with a picture-perfect day for Ramona Convent’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 28th. Carrying their bouquets of yellow roses, with the breeze lightly blowing their lovely dresses, the graduates moved elegantly down the lawn of Ramona’s Roseheath garden. Salutatorian Cecilia Nunez spoke eloquently,

“You have the tenacity, courage, intelligence, and character to take on the big world in front of you to accomplish incredible things. I know you won’t just step into adulthood. You will strut, run, leap, soar, and be everything you think you can be and more…because we are Tigers, not chickens. You are Ramona women and everything that comes with that so get out there and take on the world as I know you all can!”

Cecilia will be attending Harvard University in the fall where she will be studying Economics and Political Science and hopes to earn an advanced degree and work for the government sector.

Last year, Cecilia was honored by Senator Ed Hernandez as a Woman of Achievement for her work as a tutor, trainer for tutors, and student board member for Project Neo, an after-school education organization for at-risk youth in the San Gabriel Valley. Cecilia has provided guidance and support to the students in the program and has shown great leadership in encouraging and training her Ramona classmates as tutors.

She has been a member of the California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, and Key Club, served as Junior Class Treasurer and Senior Class President, and also co-founded the Women United Club, a student group that invokes women’s rights and discusses the societal issues surrounding gender-based inequalities.

The commencement address was given by Mary Donnelly-Crocker, graduate of the class of 1975, who spoke of her own experience of graduation and beyond and urged the girls to trust in their future, reminding them that they do not know now all the twists and turns their lives will take. She closed her address with a reminder to keep a sense of humor and gave each graduate an Emergency Clown Nose to be used often and especially when they are in need of a laugh.

Several members of the class have selected a major in a Science related field and attribute their decisions to the experiences that Ramona offered them. Curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking are inspired every day though the hands-on, project-based learning with real-life applications at the core of Ramona’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program.

Briana Ong, recipient of the Barbara McClintock Science Award and Ramona Rampage Robotics team co-captain, will be attending UC Berkeley where she will major in bioengineering. Her career aspiration is to aid in the development of prosthetic devices for wounded military/service members. Leading the Robotics team at Ramona was a turning point in her academic career and fostered her interest in the fusion of Biology and Technology. This year, the team qualified for the Robotics National Championships.

Collectively, the class has already accomplished great things. 100% will be continuing on to college and 38% of those will be attending University of California campuses. Because of the academically rigorous and challenging program offered at Ramona, graduates have been offered approximately $7,884,000 in merit scholarships.
