The Pasadena-Foothills Association of REALTORS® Charitable Foundation (PFARCF) presented scholarships totaling $10,000 to ten local public high school students last week. Each year, PFARCF selects winners based on several criteria including GPA, extracurricular activities, community involvement, need, personal attributes, goals and leadership skills.
The students who each received a $1,000 scholarship were Areen Andreasian of Clark Magnet H.S., Trey Ballard of Crescenta Valley H.S., Trevor Langham of Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, Rhema Taylor of Pasadena H.S., Myline Lam of San Marino H.S., Liseth Gonzalez of Blair International Baccalaureate World School, Nour Mallat and Adianna Paul of South Pasadena H.S., and Darcy Brakeman and Taleen Sarkissian of La Cañada H.S. The scholars plan to pursue careers in science, medicine, economics, architecture, and housing development and construction.
“It is a very challenging process to choose just ten winners out of so many well-qualified and deserving applicants,” said PFARCF Scholarship Committee Chair Ruth McNevin. “These students have achieved unprecedented levels of academic achievement and maintained outstanding community involvement while participating in sports, art and music programs.”
McNevin and fellow committee members Evan Huynh, Sid Karsh, Deno Kidde, Terry Shelton, Lin Vlacich and PFARCF Chair Deborah Maxson reviewed over 70 applications before finally selecting this year’s award recipients. “These scholarships provide much-needed funds to help local students earn degrees that will allow them to succeed in their professions and make an impact in their communities,” added McNevin.
Each year PFARCF holds fundraisers to finance scholarships and to support local charities. In 2016 alone, the organization donated $85,000 to community nonprofits. This year’s fundraisers include Wine Tasting on June 22, A Taste of Old Pasadena on September 12, Bingo Night on November 3 and Wreath Auction on December 1. “The more support we receive from our REALTORS®, their clients and the community,” commented PFARCF Chair Deborah Maxson, “the more funds we raise each year, allowing us to donate to our local charities and give more scholarships.”
