Russia is the theme for the 2012-13 Academic Decathlon competition. While previous years have seen FSHA’s contingent traveling abroad to locations related to the theme, a trip to Russia wasn’t in the cards. With coach Mario Pariante at the helm, the Academic Decathlon team has taken full advantage of its home region instead.
On January 18, students embarked on a field trip that started with examining the art at Silver Lake’s Holy Virgin Mary Cathedral (pictured), which is a Russian Orthodox church, and continued with dinner at Robert’s Russian Cuisine restaurant in West Hollywood. Earlier this school year, the team also watched the film “Doctor Zhivago.” All activities were merely a supplement to the intense studying that participants do to prepare for the two-day Academic Decathlon competition.
Competition gets underway with essay writing, speeches and interviews on January 26, and it concludes with testing and a Super Quiz on Saturday, February 2. Team members this year are Yasmine Dabbah, Bridget Fitzgerald, Margaret Lee, Jessie Lorrimer, Camila Strassle, Elizabeth Rojas, Katherine Russell, Nina Sarian, Elizabeth Togneri, Madeline Togneri, Adrienne Ashworth, Kacey Benson, Sierra de Sousa, Haley Shewfelt, Loretta Koch, Diana O’Toole, Ashley Wells and Lillian Widen.
