Dear San Mario Titans,
The safety of our students is the first priority of all our school sites. We take this responsibility very seriously and as such have been evaluating our practices keeping this priority in mind. Having just completed our safety review, one of the issues which was brought up especially at our secondary schools, and somewhat at our elementary schools, was the fact that each of these campuses is open and accessible and are unable to be locked down and secured. Additionally, we have also allowed companies to deliver to students via designated drop off point within the school.
Moreover, we have allowed parents and guardians to deliver to the campuses as well. Sometimes, parents and guardians would send others to make deliveries when they could not make deliveries on their own. However, there is no way of ensuring that the delivery people accessing the campuses and interacting with students are in fact valid and safe employees of the designated and approved vendors. To that end, we can also not ensure that whomever the vendor sends has been vetted to be around minors.
Finally, we can not ensure that parents and guardians are indeed who they say they are either and that they have been authorized to bring items to another person’s child. In order for us to meet our primary charge of student safety, we much make changes to practices which daily put children in harm’s way.
It is incumbent on us to make the change to protect student safety. We will continue to refine practices to afford parents the ability to drop off while maintaining student safety. Each school site will develop and communicate this practice.
