On Tuesday, March 27, Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez, O.D. (D-West Covina) hosted the 2018 Women of Achievement and Emerging Leaders Award Ceremony which recognized women and emerging leaders in the San Gabriel Valley. These women come from various disciplines, backgrounds and ages, each with unique stories. What they all have in common is the profound difference they have made in our community. Ramona’s President, Sister Kathleen Callaway, SNJM, was recognized as a 2018 Woman of Achievement in the field of Education. Upon receiving the award, Sister Kathleen told the audience “I am grateful and humbled to be recognized in this way. Our Mission at Ramona Convent to empower young women to become strong and confident members of society who will make a difference in the world closely corresponds to the purpose of this award. I would also like to thank the faculty and staff of Ramona who partner with me in our Mission.”

As a Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, Sister Kathleen has served Alhambra and San Gabriel as teacher, principal, and school president for more than 40 years. Sister Kathleen first came to Ramona in 1967. She taught 7th grade and helped with the Boarding School until she became Principal of the grade school for the 1968-1969 school year. She was later appointed Dean of Students for the 1973-1974 school year. Moving to Northern California in 1978, she spent the next nine years at Holy Names High School in Oakland of which she is an alumna. The year 1987 saw her return to Southern California and become principal of St. Anthony School in San Gabriel. In 1995, she joined Ramona’s Board of Trustees and in the 2000-2001 school year, she became the first President of Ramona.

During her tenure as president, Sr. Kathleen has raised more than $9 million dollars in scholarship assistance for Ramona families, making a high quality education possible for hundreds of students. She has helped build new state of the art science facilities on campus, including upgrading the internet infrastructure, the campus gym, and the Makerspace to provide opportunities for young women to change the world. Sister Kathleen has also generously assisted local elementary schools, collaborated with Alhambra Rotary, and provided opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills.
