South Pasadena High School Basketball Program Hosts Free Skills Clinic for Community

On August 31, 2019, more than 130 children, ages five to thirteen, participated in a free basketball fundamentals clinic at South Pasadena High School (SPHS). Current SPHS players and coaches, along with special guests Mike Rios and Nina Davis, created a fun-filled day for the community.

“The turnout for this event really demonstrates the positive energy that is brewing in South Pasadena,” said SPHS Athletic Director Anthony Chan. “I appreciate all the work that the coaches and volunteers put in during a holiday weekend. Their commitment exemplifies service to others above self.”

Special guest Mike Rios, an athletic counselor and assistant basketball coach from Antelope Valley College, shared tips with parents about raising student-athletes. This information reinforced the messages parents and students hear during the Positive Coaching Alliance sessions held at the high school, specifically teaching that encouraging athletes with positive reinforcement helps youth get the most out of sports. Attendees also heard Nina Davis, a four-year player at Baylor University, Big 12 Player of the Year (2015), and Wooden Award Finalist (2015, 2016) share about her experiences with athletics and character development.

“It was amazing how many players attended, said Davis. I was impressed with the kids’ dribbling and shooting skills, their positive attitudes, and how hard they all worked. I look forward to the next South Pas community event.”

SPHS Boys’ Basketball Head Coach Ernest Baskerville created the event to introduce his coaching staff and basketball program to the community and to encourage attendance at basketball games later this year. League play will be held at South Pasadena Middle School during the 2019-2020 season due to upgrades at the high school’s athletics facilities. The girls’ varsity basketball home league opener will be January 10, 2020 at 5:15 p.m. versus La Canada followed by the boys’ varsity game at 7:00 p.m.
