South Pasadena High School Football Coach Marty Konrad Resigns

South Pasadena High School football coach Marty Konrad resigned Thursday, among allegations that his brother filmed La Canada’s practice the week of the game between the teams in November.

The allegation center around Konrad’s brother, his former assistant coach, was seen filming La Canada’s practices.

South Pasadena won the game, which was for third place in the Rio Hondo League and the league’s final guaranteed playoff spot.

Rio Hondo League officials decided the week of the game that South Pasadena would forfeit its win and eventually a chance to play in the CIF Southern Section Central Division playoffs.

Konrad disclosed, in a November letter to players and parents, that his brother was at La Canada on the day in question, but had not been a member of his team’s coaching staff for the past two years.

Also in the letter, Konrad said school officials rushed to judgement without conducting a thorough investigation. Konrad was suspended for the La Canada game, where South Pasadena won 21-3. La Canada went to the playoffs, where it lost in the first round the following week.

The Pasadena Star-News reported that the Rio Hondo League held a special meeting about the situation in late November at Temple City High, where many South Pasadena parents had hoped the meeting would result in a reversal of the league’s original decision.
