Exploring many varied activities and trying out leadership roles helps students mature in good ways and at Southwestern Academy, they are able to develop new interests and become aware of the diverse world by being introduced to new cultures and experiences. Students grow in their academic careers, and are able to grow as individuals as well. Southwestern offers many opportunities for students to discover leadership roles, whether it be as a club representative or as a part of the student government. This year, senior Terrence Amenya embraces the title of Student Body President by setting positive examples for his classmates. The school asked Terrence a couple of questions about his six years at Southwestern Academy and his plans for college:
How does it feel to be President this year?
T: Well to be trusted by the people around me to be a leader and to be given the chance to be President is an amazing feeling. Being at Southwestern for so long, this has been a goal of mine.
What are you most looking forward to during your senior year?
T: The thing I am most looking forward to would probably be the memories that will be made during this last year of high school. High school is a big part of everyone’s life. This being my last year at Southwestern, it might be the last time I ever see some of my fellow classmates again. At Southwestern, I never really feel alone since I can always go to a friend and find something to do. I want to make as many good memories as possible and I think so far I am.
How are you preparing for college?
T: This past summer I took two courses through the school that helped me a ton in my preparation for college. The first class I took was an SAT prep course taught by Mrs. Osmonson and the second one was a College Prep course taught by Dr. Montes de Oca. During that time, I not only strengthened my test taking skills for the SAT, I also got to travel throughout California to visit and learn about different colleges to better help me while working on my college applications.
What is your favorite quote and what does it mean for you?
T: A quote I have always been a fan of is one by hip-hop artists J Cole. “I’d rather be happy being myself than sad trying to please everyone else”. I relate to this quote because it has always been my mindset whenever it comes to expressing me as a person. I always want to be true to both myself and to those around me. I think this mentality is making it easier for me to write college application essays and find the right school for me.
Southwestern Academy hopes Terrence continues to showcase his leadership skills as he continues to thrive towards a successful future. The school is proud to have him as its 2017-2018 Student Body President!
