St. Elizabeth School Celebrates El Dia de los Muertos
On November 2nd, loving families all over Latin America celebrate the memories of their beloved family members who have gone from this life into the next. The students of St. Elizabeth School took this opportunity to learn more about El Dia de los Muertos, or The Day of the Dead. During Spanish class, students in grades 3-8 learned about this very special holiday through video, discussions and the sharing of family traditions and stories. Students were happy to learn that the beautiful tradition of El Dia de los Muertos came about as a result of the blending of two cultures; the culture of the Aztecs and that of the Catholic Spaniards.
Students brought ofrendas, or offerings, to the altar which displayed many of the traditional symbols of El Dia de los Muertos, including candles, incense, marigolds and the pictures of loved ones whose memories the students wished to honor.
El Dia de los Muertos coincides with the Catholic holiday of All Saints’ Day and is a beautiful way to remember those we have loved and lost.
