St. Francis High School congratulates senior John Balog ’19 on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout! John is a member of Troop 502 in La Canada.

John began scouting in 1st grade as a Tiger scout at St. Bede School and he chose St. Bede Parish as the recipient of his service project. John’s project included constructing and securing two benches to the patio on the east side of the sanctuary as well as planting a drought tolerant garden. Through the generosity of family, friends and local businesses he was able to raise nearly all of his $1400 budget.

While in Troop 502, John served as a Troop Guide, Den Chief, Patrol Leader, Assistant SPL, SPL and an Instructor. He attended the National Youth Leadership Training and was selected for Order of the Arrow. John enjoyed spending many summers at Cherry Valley and Emerald Bay camps and earned the National Outdoor Camping and Aquatics awards. He earned 35 merit badges and 2 religious medals.

Scouting gave John many opportunities to perform service for others and learn leadership. John has done service projects for Habitat for Humanity, The Midnight Mission, Brothers Helpers, and Rose Bowl Stingrays. At St. Francis John is the Captain of the swim team and water polo team. He is a daily anchor on KNIT, a Kairos leader and member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. John credits scouting with giving him the confidence and desire to pursue leadership opportunities.
