The Pasadena Unified School District has closed the swimming pool at Pasadena High School at 2925 E Sierra Madre Blvd. for significant required maintenance, which means many of the water activities scheduled there for the summer will have to be transferred to other locations.
City Human Services and Recreation Director Horace Wormely, in an announcement in the City Manager’s Newsletter, said fiberglass is peeling from the lining of the pool and has caused an injury during the school year.
“PUSD is in the process of securing bids for the repair,” Wormely said. “While the District estimates that the pool will be available in mid-July, this is a significant repair and a more detailed schedule of maintenance will be available once a contractor has been selected.”
Earlier, the City moved swimming lessons and aquatics fitness classes from the pool at the Robinson Park Recreation Center when renovation started at the center.
The city offers swimming lessons, aquatics fitness classes, swim teams, water polo and recreation swim that serve over 30,000 annually at at least five locations: Blair High School, Coral Pool in Altadena, Villa Parke Community Center, and at Pasadena High and Robinson.
Lessons are offered for ages three through 17 for youth and 18 and over for adults. Weekly lessons run Monday through Thursday for $45.
Last year, the pool at Pasadena High accounted for over a third of total pool visits and 30 percent of swim lesson sales.
With the closures at the two locations, morning swimming lessons will be transferred to Blair High School, and evening lessons to John Muir High School. Swim and water polo practices will be held at Blair from noon to 1 p.m. and competitive swim and water polo meets will be held at John Muir High on the weekends, the announcement said.
Members of the public who have registered for swimming lessons at Pasadena High will be offered a transfer to another pool or a full refund.
