Walden School Announces New Science and Outdoor Education Specialist

Xana and Sea Star at Seattle Aquarium at 20 months.

Walden School is excited to announce that Xana (pronounced SHAWNA) Hermosillo will be Walden’s new Science and Outdoor Education Specialist! As with all of its specialty teachers, Walden is looking for “a role model in their field of expertise, embodying what it means to live their passion.” Walden wanted a scientist who was also a teacher, not just a science teacher. And in Xana it found the perfect candidate.

Xana is a passionate marine scientist with 13 years of formal and informal classroom experience. She has a Masters in Science from the University of Texas, Marine Science Institute; and a B.A. from Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. For over 10 years, Xana has worked as a Pre-K thru 12th grade science instructor at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, CA.

Xana is also an avid lover of the outdoors and uses the environment as a teaching tool. Through partnership with the USC Sea Grant, she spent the last two summers on Catalina Island, developing and coordinating the High School Marine Laboratory.

Prior to this experience, Xana was an instructor at the Wilderness Outdoor Leadership Foundation in Malibu. There she mentored and taught 3rd thru 11th grade students through team building, environmental science exploration, canoeing, kayaking, and first aid and CPR training.

The school is thrilled that Xana has decided to share her expertise and establish roots at Walden. Her background made her an ideal candidate, but it was her warmth, confidence, experience, and two differentiated demonstration lessons that left both classes of K/1 and 4/5 Walden students asking when she was coming back that made her the undisputed choice of the hiring committee. http://ow.ly/F4hh301GjhH
