Wander Through the Westridge School's 6th Grade "Women of Character & Courage" Wax Museum

Who’s that girl?

The 6th Grade presented their annual Women of Character & Courage “Wax Museum” in the gym this past week, performing in full costume monologues they’d created in the voices of women from all over the world who made notable contributions to society or accomplished extraordinary goals.

From the first African-American woman cartoonist Jackie Ormes (pictured above), to Burmese politician and diplomat Aung San Suu Kyi, famous female experts and influencers seemed to take over campus for the day. The 6th graders invited friends and families to view the show by pressing the button in front of each student, bringing them temporarily “to life” to deliver her monologue. Their written reports on their chosen figures lined the gym, providing additional historical context for their performances.

“This project is a huge undertaking for our 6th graders,” says Christine Kiphart, who teaches 6th grade language arts and social science. “Through learning about the women, they also learn a great deal about social structure and cultural heritage, historically and currently, in the parts of the world the women represent. It also helps our students develop their own character and courage, while honoring these women.”
