Westridge School Take 1st Place at Middle School Debate Tournament



After 6 weeks of researching, hours of team planning and working together, 2 scrimmages, and 6 hours of vigorous debate on Saturday, the Westridge Middle School Debate team took 1st place in the Tournament Award for Percentage of Wins. That means the Westridge Team had the highest percentage of wins than any other 42 teams.

Saturday, Dec.13 marked the second Middle School Debate Tournament of the year and it was held here at Westridge School. Students arrived at 8:00am, conferred with their team-mates, and began Round 1 at about 9:15am. One hundred and thirty-five students arrived from 8 schools, including Chandler, Clifton, Mayfield, Poly, Sequoyah, Northview, and New Horizon.

According to Resse Owen, 7th grader, “It was really fun!” “Winning is rewarding for our effort,” added Olivia Molina-Kong.Additional awards picked up by the team include: 12th Place Team Award to group “Molina, Siskel, Owen;” 4th Place Team Award to “Polonsky, Harris, Seitz”. Individual speaker award point to Juliette Polonsky –placed 29th, Stephanie Seitz – placed 13th, and Rachel Harris placed 3rd in the whole tournament – out of 135 people.
