Why You Should Love Your Library

Everyone agrees that libraries are a good thing. But when push comes to shove, they’re an expensive and expendable budget item, right? Wrong. Research shows that investing in a well-maintained and up-to-date library will pay off. In addition, a critical but often overlooked resource in a library is the credentialed teacher-librarian. Why is this position so important?

1. Student-to-teacher ratio drops by 50% when students are in the library with their teacher and librarian.

2. The librarians are experts in finding the best practices and resources for teaching, including new technology and emerging Internet tools. They can be a valuable source of information for your teachers.

3. Why have all your second-grade teachers hunt on their own to find resources on China or sea life? Librarians can make suggestions to the teachers as to where to find the best materials, thus freeing up the teachers time to do what they do best–teach.

4. Principals often find themselves researching questions about the best teaching materials and approaches (print versus e-textbooks, for example). Your school librarians are professional researchers, so engage them by having them investigate such matters for you.
