A 4-year-old boy died and his 3-year-old brother and the children’s mother were critically injured after a fire tore through two apartment units in Pasadena on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The brother and mother, 29, were rushed to a hospital in critical condition with smoke inhalation and burns, Pasadena city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said. They were subsequently flown by helicopter to a specialized burn center for further treatment.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 p.m. in the 100 block of East Washington Boulevard, according to city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian. Firefighters quickly declared a “second alarm” and called for reinforcements as they found two units “well-involved” with flames.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the scene, with the first units arriving less than four minutes after the initial call, Pasadena Fire Department Interim Chief Bryan Frieders said. They encountered two apartments on the first and second floors of the building in flames.

“There were reports of victims who were trapped inside the building,” he said. “Our firefighters made immediate access to the building and discovered three victims.”

Paramedics pronounced a young child dead at the scene, fire officials said. Another small child and a woman believed to be the children’s mother were rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The victims had been in a first floor unit.

A neighbor/witness who identified herself as Monique said she first heard the sound of screaming and went outside to see what was happening.

“So when I looked, I saw white smoke coming out of the upstairs apartment building. I started praying that everybody was okay,” she said. Bystanders were holding a small child.

“I saw them holding a little baby, and he had burns on his arms and they started splashing water on him,” the neighbor said.

The child’s mother was brought down from the apartment a short time later, Monique said.

“She was just hollering and screaming and she had black smoke on her. I didn’t really see burns, but she was just yelling because, I think, you know, the one more baby was in the house.”

No other injuries were reported.

Units from the Glendale and Los Angeles County Fire Departments assisted in the firefighting effort, according to online dispatch records.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, officials said.
