[Updated March 30, 2016 | 1:00 p.m.] Two people killed and three other people were critically injured at a two-vehicle traffic crash this morning that involved a maroon Ford Mustang and an SUV.

The crash occurred about 7 a.m. in the area of Lake Avenue and East Villa Street, according to Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.

A light blue Kia Sorrento going northbound on Lake Avenue was getting ready to make a left hand turn and head west on Villa Street, when its driver apparently failed to see the approaching Mustang going southbound on Lake Avenue, said Pasadena police Lt. Mark Goodman.

“The light blue Kia turned in front of the Mustang causing a collision,” Goodman said. `There was a secondary collision during which the maroon Mustang struck the light pole at the southwest corner of Lake Avenue and Villa Street.”

The driver of the Mustang was a 23-year-old man, a resident of Pasadena. He sustained major injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to a local hospital, where he died.

The front passenger of the Mustang was a 17-year-old Pasadena resident who sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision by Pasadena fire department personnel.

There were also two additional passengers in the Mustang. The left rear passenger was a 22-year-old man and the right here rear passenger was a 27-year-old man. Both are Pasadena residents, and both sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision.

They were both transported to a local hospital where they remain in stable condition.

The driver and sole occupant of the Kia was a 46 year old woman who is a resident of the city of Los Angeles. She sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to and treated at a local hospital.

The closure on Lake Avenue should be in effect for several hours Wednesday morning, although an approximate length of closure was not immediately known, Goodman said.
