Health officials reported a dozen new COVID-19 infections in Pasadena on Thursday, but no additional deaths.

With no deaths reported since Oct. 8, the city had tied its previous record of 27 days without a fatality, according to city data. The last time Pasadena went that long without a reported COVID-19 death was in the 27-day stretch between Aug. 6 and Sept. 1.

A total of 2,890 infections have been reported in the city since the start of the pandemic in March, and Pasadena’s death toll remained at 129.

Over the prior seven days, the city had documented an average of 10.1 new cases of the virus daily.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 20 COVID-19 patients on Thursday.

Los Angeles County saw 2,065 new infections and 25 new deaths on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“Today’s number of new cases surpasses yesterday’s and is the highest number of new cases not associated with backlog cases reported since late-August,” the agency said in a written statement.

L.A. County has recorded a total of 315,564 COVID-19 cases and 7,140 deaths, officials said.

An increase in workplace outbreaks appeared to be contributing to the rising numbers, officials said.

“During the two-week period of Sept. 6 through Sept. 19, there were 23 outbreaks in non-healthcare and non-residential workplaces, the lowest number of worksite outbreaks since June,” according to the county statement. “During the two-week period from Oct. 4 through Oct. 17, the number of worksite outbreaks increased to 40.”

Dr. Barabra Ferrer warned that if the increase in infections is not halted, “we will likely see more hospitalizations and deaths in the coming weeks.”

“The increase of COVID-19 cases at worksites is a reminder that transmission happens at many settings and in every situation,” she said. “Infected people spread this virus wherever appropriate protections are not in place. If you are infected, you could unknowingly spread the disease to many others, including those who have underlying health conditions that increase their vulnerability for serious illness and death.”

Officials on Thursday reported 825 people hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the county, with 29 percent of them being treated in intensive care units.
