Two separate police stops stemming from traffic violations in Pasadena Monday night resulted in the seizure of loaded handguns, along with about 14 pounds of marijuana, authorities said.
The first arrest took place just after 7 p.m. after officers stopped a car for having expired registration near Orange Grove Boulevard and Holly Street, Pasadena police Lt. Sean Dawkins said.
Officers quickly determined that the driver had a suspended license, Dawkins said. As they were detaining him, the officers discovered a loaded handgun in his waistband.
Julius Tyrese Williams, 26, of Murrietta, was booked on suspicion of carrying a loaded handgun and carrying a concealed handgun, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records. He was released from custody Tuesday morning pending legal proceedings after posting $35,000 bail.
Officer pulled over another car containing two people about 8:40 p.m. in the area of Del Mar Boulevard and Arroyo Parkway, according to Dawkins.
Again, it was discovered the driver had no valid license, he said. The passenger told police that the car belonged to him and that there was a handgun in the glove compartment.
Officer seized the loaded weapon, and also discovered about 14 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle, Dawkins said.
California law allows for the possession of a single ounce of marijuana for adults 21 and older. The amount recovered from the suspect’s car amounts to 392 ounces.
The passenger, identified as 21-year-old Wilson William Jean Francois of Philadelphia, was booked on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and unlawful transportation of marijuana, Dawkins said.
The driver, 30-year-old Kahlil Aaron El of Redding, was booked on suspicion of unlawful transportation of marijuana, he added.
Both were released from custody with citations pending their initial court appearances, records show.
