20 Events Planned for Walktober 2022, With Direct Support of the City

The City is organizing at least 20 walking events for Walktober 2022 – an awareness campaign which highlights the health and community benefits of walking. 

For this year’s Walktober, the Department of Transportation (DOT) brought Day One Inc. under contract to support and assist with the planning and implementation of events. 

Donson Liu, city associate engineer, said the events will be held in partnership with institutions including Pasadena Unified School District, Playhouse Village Association, Old Pasadena, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Audubon Society.

On October 1, Audubon Society will host Discover Birding, which is an introduction to birding, from 8:00-11:30 a.m., according to Liu. On the same day, NAACP will host Pasadena African American History Walk at Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.

On October 23, residents can participate in the “Garden Tour of Washington Park.” They can also taste “fine foods and sweet treats” being offered in the East Washington Village – a popular food destination in the city, in “Taste of East Washington Village,” on October 29.

The rest of the Walktober events are still being finalized, according to Liu.

Details about scheduled events will be posted on a Walktober website currently under development.

This is the first time the City will be directly supporting Walktober.

In previous years, Pasadena residents have organized their own Walktober events on a volunteer basis, without assistance from the City. 

“We have historically supported Bike Month but not Walktober and this year we thought we would support Walktober,” Liu said. 

The city has decided to fund the events in order to “encourage residents to see Pasadena on foot in a safe manner,” according to DOT’s report.
