The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association on Saturday began the interviewing process for hundreds of young women hoping to become part of the 2022 Tournament of Roses Royal Court during the first of two initial interview sessions at Tournament House, the permanent headquarters of the Tournament of Roses at 391 S. Orange Grove Blvd.
The second session will be held Monday, September 13. These two sessions constitute the first round of interviews from which about two dozen finalists will be culled before the Royal Court is announced early next month.
During this initial step in the selection process, the applicants are given 15 seconds each to present themselves before the selection committee, which will determine who among the applicants can go on to the next round.
The committee looks for candidates who display the right combination of poise, public speaking ability, youth leadership, academic achievement, and community and school involvement.
Of those who go through the initial presentation, about 250 young women will be asked to come back for a second round of interviews. The number narrows down to about 75 asked back for the third round, according to the screening procedures.
Near the end of the selection process, an announcement ceremony will be held on September 28 to reveal the 25 finalists for the 2022 Royal Court.
The final seven members of the Royal Court will be presented about a week later during a formal program at Tournament House on October 4.
Ultimately the Rose Queen will be announced and crowned during a ceremony on the evening of October 26.
The young women selected to the Royal Court experience benefit from an experience that allows them to connect with and give back to the local community, develop public speaking skills, and grow their self-confidence.
The 2022 Royal Court could attend dozens of community and media functions, and will serve as ambassadors of the Tournament of Roses, the Pasadena community, and the greater Los Angeles area.
On New Year’s Day, the Rose Queen and her Royal Court will be riding on the Royal Court float in the 133rd Rose Parade presented by Honda. They will also be attending the 108th Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual.
