“Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language” will be the theme for the 2024 Rose Parade, newly confirmed President and Chairman of the Board of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association Alex Aghajanian announced Thursday night.

“The 2024 theme brings us together through music,” Aghajanian said on the front steps of Tournament House as the thunderous beat of taiko drums filled the air. “In a world of different cultures, beliefs, hopes, and dreams, one language unites us all — music.”

Long-time Tournament volunteer Aghajanian will lead the 135th Rose Parade presented by Honda and 110th Rose Bowl Game on Monday, January 1, 2024.

“The theme means uniting us together,” Aghajanian told Pasadena Now, following the official announcement.

“We can be of different languages and different backgrounds, but music always binds us together. So I’m looking forward to music playing that role, and us celebrating all forms of music from all over the world,” the new President said.

Noting that the parade features music every year, Aghajanian stressed that during the 2024 parade “we’re going to see a lot more music this coming year, and all sorts of different types, choirs, all sorts of different forms of music,  are going to be in this year’s parade.”

“The sound, texture, rhythm, form, harmony, and expression meld together to move, soothe, excite and delight the world. From bossa nova to blues, classical to country, metal to mariachi and rock to rap, thousands of genres invite us to become one in celebrating a world of music.”

The theme poster was also revealed and brought to life through animation.

Aghajanian also spoke about his delight in leading a parade he has worked on as a volunteer for 35 years.

Throughout his extensive Tournament of Roses career, Aghajanian has served on and chaired various committees including the Budget and Finance, Communications and Credentials, Formation, Music, Parade Policy, and Queen and Court committees.

“It’s an honor for me to be in this position. I’ve been a volunteer for 35 years, and that time here has taught me many things about community service, about what this organization does for the community, and the volunteers in this organization, just how dedicated they are. Now I get to lead them, and I am very honored.”

The new association president traditionally announces the theme for the next parade on the night he or she officially ascends to the position.
