Caltech, ArtCenter College of Design and Armory Center for the Arts have been named as grant recipients to participate in the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time 2024” exhibit, which will explore the intersection between science and art in Southern California, the foundation announced Wednesday.

As part of its exhibit series, the Getty Foundation has selected 45 Southern California organizations and museums to share $5.38 million in funds to create the artistic collaboration “to confront climate change, environmental justice, pandemics, biotech, and other complex challenges by weaving together science and art,“ the Caltech Library said via social media.

The theme for “Pacific Standard Time 2024” will be ‘Art x Science x LA,” according to Getty.

“This iteration will present an ambitious range of exhibitions and public programs that explore the connections between the visual arts and science, from prehistoric times to the present and across different cultures worldwide,” the foundation said in a written statement.

“From alchemy to anatomy, and from botanical art to augmented reality, art and science have shared moments of unity, conflict, and mutual insight,” the statement added. “The next PST theme connects these moments in the past with the most pressing issues of today. By examining such critical issues as climate change and the future of artificial intelligence, PST will create an opportunity for civic dialogue around the urgent problems of our time.”

ArtCenter College of Design was awarded $110,000 for its project, titled “Seeing the Unseeable: Intersections in Data, Science, Art and Design.”

“‘Seeing the Unseeable’ will explore how art, science, and design have become integrated in the work of both scientists and contemporary artists,” according to the Getty statement.

Armory Center for the Arts was awarded $100,000 for its contribution to the project, called “From the Ground Up: Nurturing Diversity in Hostile Environments.”

“The exhibition will look at the ways art and science can work together to encourage sustainable food and shelter using traditional environmental management techniques that stand in contrast to the industrialized processes that dominate corporate farming,” the statement said.

Caltech will receive $83,00 for its submission, “Virtual Witnessing: Seeing Caltech Science.”

“Virtual Witnessing: Seeing Caltech Science” will “tell stories from Caltech’s 133 years of using art and images in science and engineering research, science communication, and campus community,” according to Caltech Library’s online post.
