Officials in Pasadena reported 120 new COVID-19 infections and three additional deaths on Thursday, as infections contracted over the recent holidays continue resulting in fatalities, officials said.

The three new deaths involved people over 75 years old who lived among the community, as opposed to in a care facility, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

“All had symptoms onset at or around Christmas and were likely exposed during the Christmas holiday,” she said.

The new figures raised Pasadena’s overall totals to 8,941 cases of the virus and 189 deaths.

The city’s average daily infections over the prior week had decreased to 149, down from 198 as recently as Sunday.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 200 COVID-19 patients, with 38 of them being treated in intensive care units.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 17,723 new infections and 287 new deaths.

More than 7,900 patients were being treated for COVID-19 at hospitals throughout the county, with 21% of them being housed in ICUs, according to an L.A. County Department of Public Health statement.

L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer urged individuals and businesses to do their part to help by following social distancing protocols.

“When we ask our residents to stay home and follow the rules and businesses to follow the Health Officer Orders, it is to stop the loss of life from COVID-19,” she said. “This disease is running rampant right now, and we continue to plead with residents, businesses and government, the community to do all possible to stop the spread.”

The county’s overall positivity rate stood at 18%, with 5.12 tests administered, officials said.

The California Department of Public Health announced 35,930 new infections and 552 more fatalities on Thursday.
