Artists and creators behind movies like Brave, Jurassic Park, Hair Love and My Dad the Bounty Hunter are among the 500 participants set to attend the Lightbox Expo in Pasadena from Oct. 14 – 16.

The Pasadena Convention Center event will feature more than 150 panels and the prestigious Concept Art Awards.

“We’re delighted to host LightBox Expo in person after two years of virtual events,” Bobby Chiu, LightBox Expo’s Creative Director, said.

“Throughout the pandemic, we experimented with ways to bring artists together online, including launching our popular LightBox Expo Discord channel. And while that’s been a rewarding experience for the LightBox Expo community which has grown internationally in ways we never could have imagined, there’s absolutely nothing like walking through an event filled with over 500 of the most talented artists, writers, and filmmakers working today.”

“Anyone who is interested in the visual arts, and even more so, students, aspiring professionals and professional artists will all find something to love at the show.”

Chiu is a celebrated character designer and illustrator. His co-founder, Jim Demonakos, the Expo’s Executive Director, is one of the directors of the award-winning documentary “Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters.”

The annual LightBox Expo, abbreviated as LBX, is a celebration of the artists and creators behind your favorite films, animation, games, TV shows and illustrations. The expo premiered at the Pasadena Convention Center in 2019, aiming to connect fans with the artists and creators behind their favorite shows.

This time, LightBox Expo is back in person and will feature the prestigious Concept Art Awards, designed to recognize and bring increased awareness of the role of concept artists throughout the world of movies, television, video games, and more.

This year’s finalists include artists working on projects like “Encanto,” “Turning Red,” “Dune,” “The Batman,” “Moon Knight,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” “Apex Legends,” and “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.”

Among the recipients of this year’s Concept Art Awards Lifetime Achievement Award is Mary Blair, the legendary concept artist of films including Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Cinderella, who will posthumously receive the award on Saturday, October 15.

“It can’t be overstated how important concept artists are, essentially none of the things you mentioned would be possible without artists who come up with the visual design of every single thing you see on screen, from character design, to environments, to props and more,” a statement by the organizers said.

“They are the foundation on which everything you see is built from.”

The full list of finalists in the 2022 Concept Art Awards can be viewed at www.conceptartassociation.com.

The organizers said Nickelodeon and Paramount will be hosting an after-hours party on Friday night, October 14.

For the panels, an exclusive screening of “ONI: Thunder God’s Tale” from Netflix will be featured, with the filmmakers doing a Q&A afterward.

LightBox Expo also partnered with Spain-based festival Animayo to show their best of winners at LBX. A panel is also on the schedule with all the concept artists from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one with the filmmakers behind the incredible animated movie “The Bad Guys.”

“This year’s event feels like a homecoming,” Demonakos, LightBox Expo’s Convention Director, said. “After our debut event in 2019, we moved online, and we’re eager to get back together to celebrate the arts in person.”
