More than three-quarters of Pasadena residents over 16 years old have received their first dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine regimen, while more than 55% of the city’s population is fully vaccinated, officials announced Tuesday.

The Pasadena Public Health Department reported 91,329 Pasadenans have received single doses, amounting to 77.5% of the population above the minimum vaccination age of 16. Another 65,733 residents were fully vaccinated, representing 55.8% of the community.

Transmission of the virus remained low this week with two new infections and no deaths reported on Tuesday.

According to city records, Pasadena has recorded 11,241 COVID-19 infections, along with 346 deaths.

An average of 3.6 new infections were detected each day over the prior seven days.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 273 new infections and 18 deaths on Tuesday, bringing the pandemic totals to 1,234,202 cases of the virus and 23,930 fatalities.

County officials added that 386 patients were being treated for COVID-19 at county hospitals. A quarter of them were being treated in intensive care units.

As the county stood on the verge of transitioning into the “yellow tier” under the state’s reopening guidelines, L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer urged continued caution.

“It is a big deal for L.A. County, a county of more than 10 million people, to move into the least restrictive tier in the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. We are successful only because together we took a stand to lower COVID-19 transmission by following the guidance and safety measures,” she said.

“While transmission is low here, we are still in the middle of a pandemic, variants of concern are circulating, and there is still widespread transmission occurring in other parts of the world,” according to Ferrer. “We know how to get our rates low, now we must keep them low by getting vaccinated and continuing to follow the guidance. Our gains are fortified as more people are vaccinated.”

Officials reported Monday that more than 8 million doses of vaccine had been administered in L.A. County, including just under 5 million first doses. More than 3,045,000 county residents were fully vaccinated.

The California Department of Public Health announced 1,349 new infections on Tuesday, raising the statewide total to 3,645,341.

State officials reported two deaths, which was far less than the 18 documented in L.A. County alone. A reason for the discrepancy was not clear. The CDPH listed a total of 60,765 deaths due to the pandemic on Tuesday.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week held stable at 1.1%, according to CDPH data.

As of Tuesday, L.A. County accounted for 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 39% of the state’s fatalities.
