Police arrested a man on suspicion of elder abuse after they say he shoved a 76-year-old woman to the ground in an unprovoked attack as she walked along Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena on Sunday morning.

The crime took place about 9:10 a.m. as the victim was walking in the 3400 block of East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena police Lt. Anthony Burgess said.

Without uttering a word, a man came up behind the woman and pushed her to the ground, he said. She suffered abrasions to her hands and knees, but declined to be taken to a hospital.

Responding officers found and arrested Richard Agbalog, 37, nearby in connection with the attack, according to Burgess. He was described as a transient.

Officers also discovered several credit cards believed to have been stolen in Agbalog’s pockets, the lieutenant added.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse.

The motive for the seemingly random assault was not clear.

According to Los Angeles County booking records, bail for Agbalog was set at $50,000 pending his initial appearance in the Pasadena branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court, which was scheduled Wednesday.
