The Altadena Town Council announced it will hold its monthly meeting on April 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the Altadena Community Center. The meeting will be open to the public and streamed live on the Pasadena Media YouTube channel.

According to the Council’s agenda posted, the meeting will begin with a flag salute led by Faye Haslett, a student from Muir High School. Recording Secretary Pat Sutherlen will then take a roll call, and Vice Chair Nic Arnzen will approve the meeting agenda.

Council Chair Victoria Knapp, Vice Chair Nic Arnzen, Recording Secretary Pat Sutherlen, Treasurer Chris O’Malley, and Corresponding Secretary Dorothy Wong will deliver officer reports.

The Council will also vote on approving the minutes from the March 19, 2024 meeting.

Public safety reports will be provided by representatives from the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, California Highway Patrol, and L.A. County Fire Department.

Community reports will follow, with updates from Parks and Recreation, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Eaton Canyon Nature Center.

A special presentation on the first phase of an advertising bus shelter replacement project will be given by Nuraddin Sadr, a project manager from the L.A. County Public Works Department. This presentation is expected to provide details on the scope and timeline of the project, as well as its potential impact on the community.

The meeting will also feature reports from various Council committees, including Land Use, Safe Streets, Communication, and Legislative. These committees focus on specific areas of interest and provide recommendations to the Council on related matters.

During the general public comment period, community members will have the opportunity to address the Council and voice their concerns or opinions on local issues. Comments will be limited to two minutes per person, and the Council will not respond during the meeting.

However, if a response is required, the comment will be forwarded to the appropriate Council member for follow-up.

The Altadena Town Council serves as an intermediary between the residents of Altadena and the county government, conveying the needs, wishes, and concerns of the community to various governmental bodies and agencies.

The Council consists of 16 members representing eight census tracts within Altadena, with two seats per tract. One seat per tract is open for election every two years, ensuring that the Council members are residents of the community they represent.

As Altadena is an unincorporated town, it does not have a mayor or city hall, and the town is managed by the Los Angeles County Supervisors. Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents the 5th District and is considered the “Technical Mayor” of Altadena, relies heavily on the Altadena Town Council to help make decisions affecting the community.

The Council encourages community involvement through volunteering, voting, and providing feedback on neighborhood issues. It emphasizes the importance of staying informed about local issues, participating in elections, and engaging with Council representatives to ensure the community’s needs are met.
