Alvar Kauti, Former Pasadena City College Dean, Passes Away

Former Pasadena City College Dean of Students Alvar Kauti died in his home in Idyllwild on August 18 after to a brief illness. He was 79.

Kauti, who was also a football coach and a health teacher at Pasadena City College, is survived by his children, Timothy Kautiainen and Heidi Shepherd; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kautiainen and Roger Shepherd; and his four grandchildren, Rella and Sierra Kautianen and Court and Kirsten Bishop.

Kauti was born in Los Angeles to Finnish immigrant parents. He was raised in the greater LA Area and studied in Rosemead High School, where he first ventured to his football career. He continued playing football when he studied in both John Muir Junior College and UCSB.

He took up his master’s degree at CSULB and later worked for several positions at Pasadena City College, including as an associate professor, a health teacher and a football coach. He served as the college’s dean for 18 years upon which he spearheaded the Pasadena City College Flea Market to generate scholarships.

Kauti also served as the Scholarship chairman of Finlandia Foundation, Los Angeles Chapter and as the former President of the Pasadena Services Federal Credit Union.

He lived in Pasadena for many years, and then later moved to both Palm Desert and Idyllwild.

His memorial will be held on Sunday, September 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pasadena Museum of History, Giddings Conference Room located at 470 West Walnut Street.

Donations can be given in lieu of flowers to the Finlandia Foundation Scholarship Fund.
