Amazon will open a new market in Pasadena on Sept. 15. The market will be located at 3425 E Colorado Blvd.

Amazon Fresh markets feature cashier-less grocery shopping where customers’ selections are tracked as they place items into their shopping carts. When they’ve finished shopping, the customers simply leave the store. Their credit cards are charged for their purchases and they receive the charge information via e-mail a short time later.

The store is also tailored for online shopping which is available for pickup or delivery, with free same-day service available to Amazon Prime members.

“It means a lot. First of all, the residents will have another new and exciting place to go shopping and a different experience. They’ve been looking forward to it,” said Councilmember Gene Masuda. The market is located in Masuda’s Council district.

“They’ve been reading a lot about Amazon Fresh and how the shopping works — how you just put things in your cart, and it already knows what you have. I think that new experience is what they’re looking forward to. So, definitely a great opportunity. The opening has been building. People have been hearing about it, and so people are very inquisitive. They look forward to finding out what it’s all about. And of course, people like to shop and Amazon Fresh is saying that it’s going to be an easy way to shop.”

The chain opened its first brick-and-mortar store in 2020 and now has more than 40 stores in the U.S.

Amazon also owns Whole Foods, which it bought for $13.4 billion in 2017. The look and feel of Amazon Fresh, sleek and modern, is akin to comparing a more functional atmosphere with Whole Foods luxury experience.

“I want to thank Amazon Fresh opening up in the fourth district. They’re going to be serving all of Pasadena and surrounding cities. We think people all around are going to just see what it’s all about and go shopping there,” Masuda said.

The Councilmember also said a lot of good things are happening in his district.

“It’s very exciting in our district. We’ve always had the auto dealerships opening and establishing in our district. And of course, the Home Depot, the General Motors Design is coming. And of course, now Amazon Fresh so we’re always we’re always pleased when companies decide to come to our city and if they come to the fourth district, at least from my point of view, I’m very pleased.”
