Apple is temporarily closing the state’s 53 outlets until further notice amid the ongoing surge of COVID-19 cases in California.

The move, reports CNBC and Bloomberg News, started Friday with the closure of two stores, one in Sherman Oaks, the other in Valencia. That was followed the next day with the closure of 11 more stores in Los Angeles County — including one in Pasadena and two in Glendale. Later that day, it was announced all of the company’s California stores would temporarily close.

The move was intended to show the company is trying to reduce the spread of the virus for employees and consumers, despite the potential business impacts.

“Due to current Covid-19 conditions in some of the communities we serve, we are temporarily closing stores in these areas,” an Apple spokesperson told CNBC in an email. “We take this step with an abundance of caution as we closely monitor the situation and we look forward to having our teams and customers back as soon as possible.”

The stores in Sherman Oaks and Valencia will be fully closed while the 11 stores that closed on Saturday will stay open for pickup on existing orders as well as appointments through Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Along with Sherman Oaks, Valencia, Pasadena and Glendale, other local stores are located in Santa Monica, Northridge, Manhattan Beach, Topanga, and Los Cerritos. Three stores in Los Angeles are located at the Beverly Center, the Grove, and in Century City, reports canyon-news.com.

Although the Sherman Oaks and Valencia outlets are closed, the other stores are currently open for pickup of existing online orders, previously scheduled in-store Genius Support appointments, and previously reserved one-on-one shopping sessions with a specialist made through Tuesday, Dec. 22, the company stated.

A company spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC that the statewide closures were due to reports in which health officials said the Southern California region had run out of intensive care unit beds.

California has seen over 1.8 million confirmed coronavirus cases, and more than 22,400 deaths as of Saturday night, according to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.
