A graduate of the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena is responsible for the design of Nissan’s revamped Pathfinder SUV line for 2022.

Marcus Quach, who graduated from ArtCenter in 2013, is the senior exterior designer at Nissan Design America, based in La Jolla.

In an interview with ABC7, he described the job as “a dream come true.”

Quach said he recognized the responsibility of being tasked with redesigning a popular model like the Pathfinder.

“[There’s] definitely some nervousness with the Pathfinder. It’s an icon for the brand,” he told ABC7. “We wanted to do kind of an homage to the heritage of the original Pathfinder. And that was something that we really tried to infuse into this design.”

Quach returned to ArtCenter last week to participate in a forum discussion about his work along with fellow ArtCenter graduate John Sahs, who heads Nissan’s design studio in Brazil.

ArtCenter Transportation Design Department Chair Stewart Reed said Quach is yet another shining example of ArtCenter alumni reshaping the world of design.

“Marcus is a treasure. He’s a great example of an alumnus,” he said. “He graduated with one of the highest GPAs we’ve had in our department. So much rigor.”

And he is in good company, according to Reed, adding that ArtCenter has “notable alumni all over the world with different automakers and even other forms of transportation with aircraft companies and yacht designers and truck designers.”

ArtCenter got its start in the 1930s, as the automotive industry was just taking shape, Reed said. “So the influence really goes up really fast over the nine decades of ArtCenter.”

The majority of transportation design faculty members also have experience in the industry, he added. Reed has served as chief designer for Toyota Advanced Design.

“ArtCenter is literally like a kind of ground zero for conversations in our field,” he said.

Nissan has supported the next generation of automotive design talent by funding the Nissan Diversity Scholarship, first established in 2013. The carmaker recently made a $20,000 donation to renew that support of students who study Transportation Design. Part of the scholarship includes potential internship or future employment opportunities at Nissan North America.

ArtCenter has a robust relationship with Nissan through Sponsored Projects, where professionals mentor students through real world design challenges and the corporate participants have the opportunity to explore these challenges through a fresh lens.
