The event goes live Wednesday, April 19, 10 a.m. at Room 626 on ArctCenter’s South Campus but the public can access it only via Zoom.
Students showcasing their creations are taking the ArtCenter College of Design Product Department’s 14-week course, which explores the future of runway by creating a variety of wearable projects, said Design Runway Faculty Coordinator Justine Parish.
According to Parish, the course was previously offered in 2017.
“We had not done this course since 2017. [Back] then we had a QR code available for students to watch the video,” Parish said. “This was new and we had never been able to do it before. It was something that came out of the pandemic, the idea that we didn’t have to be in the room to see it.”
“I’m guessing that when we do this again next year, they’ll be looking at AI (Artificial Intelligence),” Parish continued.
The Design Runway 2023 features the jackets and bags made by Jake Kaufman, Yinghua Yu’s bridal collection and men’s jackets designed by Chunyi Ou.
The students have used combined physical and digital tools and methods in creating the collections.
Parish said the three students were chosen to present their collections because they are already the only ones up for the challenge.
“These are the only three that were able to promise that they could get through the entire process in 14 weeks.”
“We had others that had applied and said they just couldn’t do it. It was too much.”
The three students were required to create a collection and make a three-minute movie showcasing their works.
“They only had to make one sample and then the rest of it could be digital,” Parish explained.
The upcoming event will be attended by industry professionals, as per Parish.
