The latest class of 113 ArtCenter College of Design graduates will receive their degrees Saturday, followed by an online showcase of their work intended to woo industry-leading employers around the globe.

The public is invited to join in both the graduation ceremony and Grad Show online, beginning at 10 a.m., according to the college.

Immediately after the commencement ceremony, in keeping with ArtCenter tradition, the graduating class will display and discuss their projects in a wide array of disciplines, ranging from fine art to industrial design.

“Grad Show is the culmination of our students’ ArtCenter educational experience and provides an opportunity for them to share their best work to a global audience of industry, alumni, friends and family,” said Kristine Bowne, ArtCenter vice president for professional development and industry engagement.

“Last term’s Grad Show had attendees from 13 different countries,” Browne said. “Grad Show gives our global community the best way to explore the breadth and depth of innovative creative talent from ArtCenter College of Design.”

The event, which takes place three times each year with each graduating class, provides invaluable exposure for the new graduates as they head out into their respective industries, she said.

“These industry attendees represent tech companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, Amazon and SNAP, in addition to long-standing partners from Adidas, Nike and Under Armour, as well as transportation companies including Tesla, Ford, Nissan, General Motors, Hyundai, UBER and Lyft, and aerospace companies such as SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and many others,” Bowne said.

Entertainment industry partners include Netflix, Dreamworks, Sony Pictures Animation, Disney Imagineering, and others, according to Bowne. “We also welcome design consultancies, start-ups, attendees from the medical technology space, and nonprofit partners,” she said.

“Our Grad Show events are wonderful opportunities to support our graduating students building their professional networks and represent the largest recruitment and industry networking events for the college,” Bowne added. “Many of our students generate job interviews and opportunities as a result of Grad Show. ArtCenter Grad Show also serves to cultivate industry partners who engage in the college through many ways including internships, recruitment, thought leadership, and sponsored projects.”

During Saturday’s commencement, ArtCenter will honor Valedictorian Sylvia “Zhiping” Xiao, who studied product design, as well as Student Leadership Award Recipient Osbaldo “Ozzy” Alvarez, who also studied product design, and Great Teacher Award recipients Fernando Olmedo and Valerie Pobjoy, according to the school.

The graduation ceremony will be streamed online beginning at 10 a.m. at https://gradshow.artcenter.edu/summer-2021, where a gallery of current and past student work is available to peruse.

“Immediately following the graduation ceremony, many students will be online in their individual Zoom rooms where you can personally congratulate them and ask any questions regarding their ArtCenter experience or future aspirations,” ArtCenter said in a written statement.

A complete schedule of activities and events surrounding graduations is available online at https://gradshow.artcenter.edu/summer-2021/p/schedule.
