Assemblyman Holden Endorses PUSD Board Candidate Wu Fredericks

Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education candidate Tina Wu Fredericks has secured the endorsement of Assemblyman Chris Holden (D-Pasadena).

“Tina has demonstrated dedication to equity and fairness for all,” Holden said in a prepared statement. “I am convinced she will be a tireless worker to achieve excellent educational opportunities for all of our students.”

Wu Fredericks is running against Milena Albert, Priscilla Hernandez, and Crystal Czubernat for the PUSD’s District 6 school board seat. 

Board districts in the Pasadena Unified School District do not conform to City Council districts. The school district includes East Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre. Wu Fredericks has lived in Pasadena for 10 years.

The seat is currently held by Larry Torres. Torres has announced that he is not seeking re-election.

According to a campaign statement, Wu Fredericks, a former teacher, is also a  community and political activist.  As a credentialed teacher, she has taught elementary, middle, and high school, including a stint in the PUSD, the statement said.

She is also endorsed by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and California School Employees Association, Local 434, which represents classified workers throughout the PUSD. 

“I am proud to earn Assemblyman Holden’s endorsement and look forward to working with him to ensure PUSD secures the funding needed from the state to continue investing in student success,” she said.

This year’s election will be a plurality election, meaning whichever candidate gets the most votes wins.

The winners will have to contend with tough issues, including declining enrollment and a plan to reopen schools. Students have been practicing distance learning since March. A spate of recent school closures has left some local parents unhappy.
