Power reliability project to impact traffic on Union Street for four weeks

Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) is launching a construction project on Friday, Sept. 6, to enhance power reliability at City Hall, officials announced last week. The project involves installing an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) on a concrete pad adjacent to the building’s south side.

The ATS will automatically switch to an alternate circuit during power outages, ensuring continuous electricity supply to City Hall. This installation is part of PWP’s ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure and prepare for emergencies.

Construction will last four weeks, affecting traffic flow on Union Street between Euclid Avenue and Garfield Avenue. Crews will trench on Union Street between these avenues and install the ATS. The initial 10 days will involve street work, with temporary traffic control measures implemented between Los Robles Avenue and Marengo Avenue.

“Pasadena Water and Power is improving local infrastructure every day,” said David Reyes, PWP Interim General Manager. “Important projects like the automatic transfer switch at City Hall help build system reliability and ensure we’re prepared to continue serving the public during emergencies.”

During street work, an individual lane closure will have the maximum impact at any given time. The final three weeks will see a small section of sidewalk closed between Euclid Ave. and Garfield Ave., with pedestrians directed to cross on Union Street’s south side.

PWP, a community-owned utility, serves over 65,000 electricity customers in Pasadena and provides water to nearly 38,000 households and businesses in the city and adjacent communities in the San Gabriel Valley. The utility operates as a nonprofit public service.
