With his first season under his belt, Pasadena City College baseball head coach Pat McGee has gone about a busy off-season in helping his graduating Lancers secure athletic scholarships at 4-year universities. So far, McGee has placed five players at the next level.

Right-handed pitcher Jason Marquez, a two-year letterman and an All-SCC HM as a freshman, has accepted a scholarship to NCAA Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Marquez (Glendale High) led the Lancers in ERA in both of his years including a 2.73 mark this past season. Primarily a reliever, he made a team-high 16 appearances with 33 innings of work (1-3, one save). He had a 3.83 ERA in 42.1 innings in 2014.

PCC’s talented double-play duo of All-South Coast Conference Second Team shortstop Thomas Castro and honorable mention second baseman Robert Mier are each committed to attend and play ball at NAIA Bethesda University (Anaheim). It will be the third time in their playing careers the pair play on the same team as they were teammates at the prep level for Bonita High.

Castro led the Lancers in batting with a .296 average along with a home run and 12 RBI while Mier hit .268 with team highs in doubles (seven) and triples (three). Each tied for the PCC lead in hits with 40. The two combined to help turn 23 double plays on defense and they each were pick to the conference’s gold gloves list.

First baseman Anthony Gonzalez, another Bonita product, is headed to NCAA Division III University of La Verne after batting .262 and leading the Lancers in RBI with 14.

Finally, righthander Calvin Bonilla (Eagle Rock High) is moving on to William Jessup University in Rocklin, a NAIA college. Bonilla didn’t pitch much in his two years at PCC, but impressed the Jessup recruiters in a post-season workout to earn a scholarship offer.

“These players worked hard for me in a year of transition for the PCC baseball program,” McGee said. “We’re very proud that they were rewarded for the time and effort they put in as Lancers. Ultimately, we are preparing them so they can reach their goals and continue their education and athletic careers at the next level.”
